A proposal to scrap the ‘reasonable grounds’ condition has failed. Police must support those working for a safer societyI’ve been stopped and searched many times. None of them ever resulted in further action. One occasion that springs to mind is when I was 14 years old, walking alone along a street near my home, when three or four officers rushed towards me after jumping out of what we referred to as a “bully van”. I compliantly explained that the woman’s purse I carried was because my aunt had sent me to the local shop for groceries. The officers seemed sceptical but eventually released me.
